TRACK GUIDE

Moig South first appeared on the point-to-point calendar during the spring 2018 season replacing the Stonehalls former track at Toomdeely in Askeaton. That previous course had a strong reputation of producing good horses, with Irish National winner Rogue Angel, Strong Flow and Noble Thyne among its more notable graduates, and Moig South has gained equal approval from riders and handlers alike.

The winner of the second ever race at the course was the now Grade 1 winner Commander Of Fleet, who also won the valuable Goffs Land Rover Bumper at the Punchestown Festival one month after his Moig South victory for Pat Doyle.

A left-handed course dominated by two long straights, the runners begin alongside the final fence and therefore have a very long run on the flat before reaching the first fence, as they must continue their way up the home straight, take the top bend and enter the back straight prior to leaving the ground. There are two fences in the back straight, both of which come in the first half of the straight, with the ground descending from the second of them as they race through a gap and begin to turn left-handed along the side of the course.

Fence three is located here, before they take the home bend and begin the climb to the winning post, with two further fences having to be jumped before then. After jumping fence four, there is a road crossing about 10 strides before the final fence, followed by a relatively short run-in.

BARRY O'NEILL

This is a real galloping track that can be quite testing. It would suit a horse that is a strong stayer.
